Can Vitamin B12 Impact Your Fertility?

can-vitamin-b12-impact-your-fertility
Vitamin B12 plays a key role in reproductive health. Low levels can affect fertility in both men and women, but improving B12 can help restore balance.

Does Vitamin B12 Affect Fertility?

Fertility challenges are increasingly common in both men and women today. One often-overlooked factor is Vitamin B12 deficiency, which can negatively impact the reproductive systems of both sexes similarly.

When the body lacks adequate Vitamin B12, it can lead to serious health issues such as weakness, memory problems, anaemia, neurological symptoms — and importantly — infertility.

What Is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin essential for the healthy functioning of the brain and nervous system. It plays a key role in cell metabolism and is vital for the formation of DNA and RNA, making it crucial for the genetic health of both sperm and eggs.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Male Fertility

Vitamin B12 is important for the production and maturation of sperm. Men dealing with infertility are often advised to include more B12-rich foods in their diet.

Effects of B12 deficiency in men:

  • Premature ejaculation
  • Low sperm motility
  • DNA damage in sperm
  • Reduced sperm count
  • Loss of libido

Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Female Fertility

Women with low Vitamin B12 levels may face significant reproductive challenges. If a woman becomes pregnant while deficient, the risk of miscarriage increases.

Vitamin B12 deficiency may contribute to:

  • Poor egg development
  • Irregular or abnormal ovulation
  • Difficulty in the implantation of the fertilised egg
  • Disruption in normal cell division

The good news: once Vitamin B12 is restored through diet or supplements, fertility functions often return to normal.

Foods Rich in Vitamin B12

You can improve B12 levels naturally by including these foods:

  • Milk and curd
  • Eggs
  • Chicken
  • Liver
  • Fortified breakfast cereals
  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Clams, oysters, mussels

Vitamin B12 Supplements

Two active forms of Vitamin B12 commonly used in supplements are:

  • Methylcobalamin (considered the safest and most effective)
  • Adenosylcobalamin

These supplements are easily available, but it’s best to take them only as per a doctor’s recommended dosage. Adequate B12 supports healthy conception and contributes to a strong, healthy pregnancy.
